Where is the fuel pump?

1984 Firebird, 305 V8 5.0L

I took my car to Mienike (i know its poorly mispelled lol) and he pointed out to me that the fuel pump is not in my gas tank as I though, but that it is located (if standing in front of the engine) to the left not far from the inner tierod!

Now I am not sure since someone said they fuel pump would never be under the hood of a car.

Anyone able to clarify on this? Crap loads of google searches give only gas tank location but the tech at the garage said he knows thats it.

The LG4 fuel pump is on the front pass side of the block. You can see it at the very bottom center of the pic below.

Re: Where is the fuel pump?

Only the fuel injected cars had fuel pumps in the tank.

In addition, some 1986 and the 1987 carburated cars had a "helper" fuel pump in the tank to "help" pump fuel up to the mechanical fuel pump on the block.

But yours onlyh as a mechanical fuel pump on the block. Mechanical because a rod inserts into the block, and gets moved up/down by a cam lobe that makes it 'pump' the fuel from the tamk.

Re: Where is the fuel pump?

Awsome to hear, I had a Nissan Altima and that had its fuel pump in the tank, was not bad though since they were smart enough to have a trap door to the spot where it is under the back seat I was horrified ide have to drop the tank on this LOL

He point out something that was not on the block though, I wonder if he was wrong about it too, he pointed at something strange just off the right side of the block, lower down by the suspension it was just...chillin there with tons of room everwhere.

Thats what I though! Great! LOL very happy to see it.

Let me ask another question, off topic I even started a thread about it but figure you seem to know your stuff having seen your engine lol

if my pump was going bad would it cause me to have a stalling feeling when I come to a stop to fast? Also when I just drove for about 10 min when I shift (automatic) into drive or reverse the RPM guage goes WAY down the engine putters and feels like its about to stall out.

Why I wanted to know the location of the pump so I can try an replace it as a process of elimination ya know.

Re: Where is the fuel pump?

In-tank "helper pumps" were factory installed on L69 305 HO cars beginning mid-year 1984. Many of the '83 and early '84 L69 cars were retrofitted at the dealer also. Check the 8th digit in the VIN for the letter G to see if it has the L69 option. If its a H then its the base LG4 engine and they didn't get the "helper pump" until '87.

The helper pump went out on a friend's '84 L69 T/A and it would hardly run. The gas pedal had to be at least half way down to keep the engine running and the car couldn't move under its own power before stalling out. It doesn't sound like you have this problem. Most likely you have an issue with the carb. When was the last time it's been rebuilt?
