Remove air pollution/smog junk for extra power

Hi guys. I'm currently doing mods to my '84 carb'd 305 to give it more power. I read an article where people dynoed a stock 305 without any of the smog junk on the engine and it came in at 224 HP. I would like to remove some of the smog stuff without causing issues with any other components under the hood. What exactly can I remove safely and do I need to plug up anything once I remove it? Pictures would be great if anyone has any, thanks in advance!

Re: Remove air pollution/smog junk for extra power

Everybody seems to have that hallucination, left over from the 70s, when to some extent it was actually true.

Not so much once computer controls started.

There's no "extra power" to be had that way. No sense hacking up your car and getting no benefit from doing so. If all you know about this sort of thing is reading a magazine article once, you're not ready yet to ruin your car. Get a little more knowledge about how those things actually work before starting on a hack job.

Wont give you any extra power...

What it will do though is make it easier for you to install a set of headers, which will give you better performance and fuel economy

Re: Remove air pollution/smog junk for extra power

Not to mention removing the smog equipment is illegal. Its FEDERALY mandated, so it doesnt matter if locally you dont have to pass emisions, its still illegal. Removing it makes your car technically no longer street legal.

That being said, Ive removed all of that stuff when I swaped to an old school carbed engine. Its just more stuff to break and malfunction. The CCC engine you have wont gain any power just from removing it. A simple tune up would do you better than removing emissions stuff. But it does make upgrading things a little easier.
