86 z28 having bad problems running right HELP!!!!

well, where do i start...

well my car would run fine one day, had power ran good, then the next it would take 5 mins to start, and when it would it would backfire and not run right at all,

so i took a look at the distributor and my cap was missing spark plug studs, so i replaced the cap, ran good for a week then ****ed up again,

so i put the car into Top Dead Compression (TDC) i got a wrench and slowly moved it into the o mark on the balancer, checked and my distributor was pointing at the number two spark plug wire on the cap, so i figured it was a tooth off, so i took the distributor out and jump it a tooth, now it runs sounds strong,, but with the pedal to the floor it goes 20MPH and just wont move without wanting to stall...

and also my tach goes upto 7000RPM and if i start my car and hit the gas pedal i can get it upto 7 grand no problem, let it idle for 5 min hit it again and it wont go past 5500, if i shut it off then start it right back up, itll hit 7 grand again, let it sit for 5 min and it wont go over 5500 yet again...

any idea what could be wrong? i know its probably out of time.... bad.... ill be honest when it comes to timing i have no clue what im doing,

ive had this car running great one day and had alot of fun in it, then the next it runs like SH*T and it blows....

if anyone can help me let me know, im clueless here, i need this car running by the weekends end, its nice out and it being a convertible doesnt help me wanting to get it out, HELP!!!!

thats somewhat concerning. you should adjust your timing by using a timing light and turning the distributer body while its installed, not by removing the distributer.

thats very concerning. you really sit and rev your 2-bolt main, cast internals engine to 7000 rpm's? why?

get your timing set correctly and go from there.
-find #1 cylinder top dead center.
-with the cap still installed, mark the base of ur dist. under the #1 spark plug post.
-remove cap, loosen the bolt holding down the distributer, rotate the base of the dist. until the rotor is pointed at the mark you made. (should now be at or very close to 0 degrees advanced.)
-tighten things up, see how it runs.
-with a timing light, and by rotating the distributer, advance the timing 2 degrees at time until it runs smooth. (2 sets of hands helps sometimes)

Ok, couple questions about this method(I know its tried and true) but I'm feeling like I'm not getting the procedure 100%. From what I know you can pull #1 plug, then crank the motor until it blows out the #1 plug hole. Then your not 180 out that way. Then I would use an old dist. (without the gear on it) to get the spindle (oil pump) in line so when the dist. seats it at #1. I didn't know the base of the dist. did anything with the cap. off. So you marking the dist. so you know where it is when your at tdc? And what exactly does moving the base do?

Thank you for any help, and hopefully you can help me and him.

Re: 86 z28 having bad problems running right HELP!!!!

You mark the base of the distributor so when you remove the cap (so you can see the rotor) you can still see where the #1 sparkplug post is.

You move the base (or body) of the dist. (with it installed of course) because the cap will move while the rotor stays stationary. Thus adjusting when the rotor strikes the posts. Thus adjusting how far before or after TDC the cylinder fires. Thus advancing or retarding the timing.

What you said about aligning the oil pump shaft is important. It's sometimes tough to get the gears meshed properly without it lined up. A long flatblade screwdriver will also work for that.
