Nothing at WOT

I was coming home from my sister on the highway when some car flew past me; so I decided to try and catch up. I put the pedal to the floor, going about 60, and the rpms just shot up. Thankfully I let off before redlining.

Another thing to add is that when when accelerating from either a complete stop or a slow speed, roughly about 25, the rpms jitter like the car wants to go but cant. The car still seems to increase speed and eventually it stop at about 50 or so.

The howl time I was driving the car was in OD. its a 305 L69 with an auto 700r4 all original.

In another thread, with one response, someone stated that it was the trans shifting into overdrive, but it doesnt seem right.

What could be the cause of the trans not engaging or maybe slipping, and what is with the jitter?

Sorry for the long speech but I dont want to make anything worse. Thanks

Re: Nothing at WOT

Sounds like the frictions are shot, or the trans is low on fluid. Take a look at the fluid level (check it with the car on a flat surface, engine warmed up and idling in park). It should be red, or maybe a light brown if the fluid is old. If its real dark and/or it smells burned, then the trans needs a rebuild.

It could also be a misadjusted TV cable if youve disconnected anything or worked on the carb recently.

Re: Nothing at WOT

I have no knowledge of transmissions. Is there any blown up pictures of a 700r4 to help me get familiar with it

On my way home from class a bit ago I was provoked by my gf old eagle talon(new owners were in it).

I was in D this time, and decided to give it ago and see if it would work. Put the pedal to the floor and everything was normal, but it didnt shift to the next gear so I had to let off the gas.

Another thing I notice is when I start it, I have to wait a bit or when i give it a bit off gas the rpms drop before accelerating(in park). Maybe just an air leak?

As for the TV cable, I dont know what that is. I cant locate it on the blown up view, in the carb forum, either. Could you help me with its location

Re: Nothing at WOT

TV cable is hooked up to the throttle on the carb with the other cables there (throttle cable, and cruise cont'l if you have it). It has a litlte plastic connector on the end of it, and the cable goes into a larger self-adjuster housing. If you havent touched it, its probably OK. Its a little tricky to adjust as the cable needs to be fully taught at WOT, or the line pressure will be low.

As far as the shift goes, the trans will not shift into 4th gear at WOT. sometimes they can also not shift into 3rd when the valvebody gets contaminated. Mine used to do it before I rebuilt it, but its been so long now, I cant remember which circuit or valve was the culprit.

Re: Nothing at WOT

Sorry for not responding sooner. Im an idiot

Im embarrassed to say what the problem was. I went straight to thinking the worse. Just needed tranny fluid. Gotta replace the oil pan gasket and filter.

Sometimes mine doesnt go WOT either, thinking a vacuum leak as well
