What is this

im trying to clean up my engine compartment. i dont know what it is and its not connected to anything.

Its in the front driver side opposite of the battery in my 88 firebird

That is a charcoal canister for emissions.

can i take it out, i dont think its connected to anything.

plus my car had an engine swap with a fully modded exhaust
and is swapped to a carburator

Yes, with a carb you dont need it. Remove it and enjoy the extra space.

gwarren is right, its a charcoal vapor canistor. remove it and plug any vacuum lines that may still be attatched.
