Bad mileage and fuel smell!!!!
Bad mileage and fuel smell!!!!
Hi everybody,
I have a big problem with my Pontiac Firebird GTA 5.7 TPI since I bought it. So far I changed spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, O2 sensor, fuel and air filter, ECM, ignition coil, fuel pump, adjust timing to 6 degrees, but can't solved very bad mileage and fuel smell when engine is working
I got about 9 mpg in city and about 13 mpg on highway before and after change those parts.
Whenever engine is working, you can feel smell of gasoline, but I can't find where. There are no leaking, but smell of gasoline is around the car and there is smell of unburn fuel in exhaust.
There is no "check engine" light, and everything seem normal when drive the car, maybe some fuzzy work on idle, but nothing special.
Does anybody have any idea what to change next?

Re: Bad mileage and fuel smell!!!!
Is the smell coming from the engine bay? Maybe the charcoal canister has a crack or a line going to it is damaged. It is the black oval cylinder part on the drivers side behind the headlight.
Re: Bad mileage and fuel smell!!!!
I removed charcoal canister, but before that everythig were the same. I can smell gasoline from the engine way as from the exhaust too.
Is there a posibillity that Fuel pressure regulator or Fuel injectors are bad?

Re: Bad mileage and fuel smell!!!!
You can check the diaphragm on the regulator as they have a tendency to dry out.
Then check your injectors...run the engine for a couple of minutes, turn it off then pull the plugs, if you have wet cylinders you have leaky injectors
