starting issue
I am having an issue with starting. 13 months ago I put a remaned starter in worked great for 6 months and all of a sudden one day after a long trip my starter didnt crank till the car cooled down then cranked right up. I warrantied that starter and got another remaned and worked great but didnt sound right. 2 weeks ago same issue again only does it mid day when engine is hot. My thought was the starter was over heating till I put another starter in and with the engine cold I didnt 1 crank or noise from it, so I got a 4th remaned starter once again after a long trip shut it of and wouldnt crank till it cooled down. Now I got upgraded to a new starter it works better but some times first turn of the key when hot I just get a click from the starter. This is driving me nuts I drive my car every day and I take long trips with this car. ( I was told my battery was too weak because it was 8.5 years old so I put a new one in and still having the issue. I also cleaned the the terminals at the battery and the starter) Sorry about the long post but I need to get to the bottom of this. Thank you.

Starting Trouble
Use a spare headlight (because it puts a load on the circuit) and connect it across the M terminal of the starter and ground.
Then connect a voltmeter across the M terminal and ground.
Make the leads long enuff to take the lamp and voltmeter into the cockpit.
Under normal circumstances you will see about 9 volts on the meter when cranking.
On the occasions the starter fails to crank note the voltage.

Re: starting issue
Sounds like something besides starter - I'd look into the neutral safety switch, or ignition switch. Mine would just "click" sometimes - turns out the neutral safety switch connector wasn't staying fully on - a zip tie solved my problem!

The NSS is mounted on the right side of the shifter.
You can temporarily jump it to see if the problem goes away.
However if that isn’t the problem:
The voltage will tell you what the problem is and what direction to turn.
If it’s about 12 while trying to crank, but the starter is not turning - the problem is in the starter.
If it’s under 8 while trying to crank - the problem is excessive resistance in the starting circuit.
Therefore if it is in the starting circuit you can move the probe you applied to terminal M at the starter, to the positive terminals at the solenoid, then keep moving up the line till the problem shows itself.

How Come Some Drivers On The Street Don’t Know How To Make A Turn In One Direction Without Starting By Turning In The Opposite Direction?
