Is changing a fuel pump on a v6 the same as a v8 F-Body?
Hey guys, when my cars fuel pump went out, I changed it myself (89 iroc 5.7). I remember it being a nightmare since my car is lowered and doing it in my tiny garage. When it went out the second time I said screw it and had a shop do it.
I sorta remember what to do, and now my friends 92 v6 firebird needs the pump replaced. He had it diagnosed at the shop and they want $900 to replace the pump including labor (eek!) And another $1100 to fix a blown/fried blower motor wiring (motor stays on when car is turned off) and a leaking distributer O-ring.
Is it the same for a v8 as far as what needs to be removed?
As far as I can remember, I had to remove the exhaust, drop the rear end on a jack, remove the pan hard bar, a bracket or two, unbolt the leather straps, and drop the tank and heat shield. Is this basically the same thing with a v6 3rd gen?
His car is barely worth 2 grand anyway so I'm trying to convince him to do it himself vs. junking the car over a $80 pump.

If that's what the going rate for changing the pump is, I'm going to offer my services locally and rake in the cash. I'd shop around if you guys really don't want to do it, that price is pretty steep for a 2-3 hour job. I bet they are adding all the jobs required together to come up with a price like that. It's a pain, but not enough to justify $900! 2 guys should be able to knock it out pretty quick, I've never had to drop the axel when I've done mine, just unbolt the exhaust at the cat, swing the exhaust to the drivers side and dropped the tank onto the exhaust (among the other steps required). Now I'm a small guy, so I can fit into the hole thats made to undo the lock ring and work the sending unit out.

Same on the V6 as on the V8.
The reason the cost is high is the location of the car: Michigan. Unless the car has never been driven in the Winter most of the bolts will need a heat wrench to remove them.
