Next time it happens, unplug the MAF and give it a whirl. If it starts, look at the maf circuit.

When cranking when it won't start, disconnect the wire coming from the ignition coil from the center of the distributor cap.

Hold it close to the block (use plastic pliers or something that won't let you get shocked) and check for spark while it cranks. If you have spark to the block, check for spark to the distributor the same way.

By doing this you are checking for spark from the coil, then checking for spark to the distributor.
