Re: fuel regulator on an almost stock 305???

Electric fuel pumps whine - that's what they do, they always have, they always will.

If your car is now carbed rather than fuel injected, then probably ...

1) it's the wrong fuel pressure regulator installed
2) the fuel system has been changed incorrectly

1) Look for an external fuel pump - should be under car, driver side, close to the tank. Many folks will disconnect the electric in-tank fuel pump and install an external electric fuel pump. If you find one, then ...

2) You need to find out if the in-tank factory fuel pump is still in the tank. If it is, then either a) it needs removed, or b) it needs reconnected and the external fuel pump removed.

The problem here is, you cannot consistently for any length of time draw fuel through a dead (non-operating) in-tank factory fuel pump. Usually what happens, is that thye external pump overheats and dies, leaving you stranded.

The issue with the regulator ... if the in-tank fuel pump is being used, then it needs to utilize a return-style regulator, where the excess fuel is returned to the tank via the factory return line - this returning fuel keeps the intank pump cool and thus extends it's life greatly. I've not heard of Spectre making a return-style regulator, thus my doubt in it.

There are 3 methods of correctly running the fuel system for a carbed car.

1) Use the intank fuel pump, with a return style regulator (like a Mallory 4309). Carb fuel pressure needs to be about 5.5 psi, TBI cars had a 12psi pump, TPI cars had much much more pressure. A return-style regulator is the ONLY way to reduce the pressure adequately while maintaining proper use of the in-tank pump.

2) Remove the in-tank pump, and use an external electric pump with a single feed line to the carb and any dead-head style regulator. You cannot draw enough fuel through the non-working intank pump without killing the external pump.

3) remove the in-tank pump, and use a mechanical pump on the engine

Not exactly what you wanted to hear, but hope it helps. Most folks jerry-rig these things so badly trying to be in a hurry and cut corners, when it's really so simple to just do it the right way. Sounds like you might have a "rigged" setup, and it may need corrected. If done correctly, you might not even notice the whining fuel pump (since whjatever pump is being used is no longer being abused).
