Charcoal canister without EGR??
Hey guys,
Can I hook up my charcoal canister without having an egr valve? Judging by the diagram below, I think not? Would it even do it's job? Also, could I tie the two vacuum lines together that go from the tank going to L and K on the carb?

My situation: I'll keep the charcoal canister if I can, but my intake has no EGR and my new carb only has 3 vacuum ports, one large port for PCV, one for vacuum advance, and a small full manifold vac port. I have one port on the intake but it will be used for the brake booster.
Is there a way to preserve the canister?
Thanks for your input

Re: Charcoal canister without EGR??
Does anyone know the difference between the L and K vacuum ports on the stock Q-Jet?
Re: Charcoal canister without EGR??
L is just a big 3/8" full vacuum port designed for the PCV system (primarily). That you'll have on most carbs.
K is just a bowl vent, I believe. If it's a big 'ol 3/8" port sticking out the front of the carb, near the top, pointing downward and to the side at some angle, that's what it is. No other carb will have that port, but you don't need it. The fuel bowls will just vent to the air cleaner housing as they have done for 5 bezillion years before evaporative emissions systems.
I was looking at your vacuum routing diagram trying to figure out why it didn't look quite right to me, then I figured it out. You're from Canada. Now I'm up to speed.

Do you know what J is?
If it's just a regular vacuum source can I connect the "?" line to J like in the picture below? Or is it not needed with the absence of the EGR?

You should keep the TVS, or else you'll be purging the canister all the time.

However, looking at this pic of the my old 305, could I use the 305's waterneck on the performer rpm and put the EGR TVS where the EFE TVS goes?

Thanks for the input guys, and yes, I'm having too much fun with paint today lol

Re: Charcoal canister without EGR??
J is an EGR vacuum port. It's kinda like a ported (off-idle) vacuum port but not really. On a Holley the timed port is kind like a "lightswitch". It goes from nothing to full vacuum quickly above idle. The QJet port is special. It gradually ramps up the vacuum as you move the throttle above idle until it's giving you everything around 20% throttle.
Thats one of the ports there really is no equivalent to on an aftermarket performance carb.

Ok thanks.
So should I connect the canister line (the one that originally went into J) through the TVS then to the constant vacuum source on the or T into the vacuum advance vac port on the holley?

Re: Charcoal canister without EGR??
It'd have to be on a timed port. Like Damon says though, the timing is different than a typical vacuum advance timed port. It'll get vacuum at a much earlier throttle opening. If it doesn't work well then you'll just have to forget about canister purge.
