355 Horse Power Estimation!
OK here is the deal, there is this guy from my city who gets old blocks and rebuild motors and posts ads on Craigslist for the rebuilt motors. Well I bought one of his motors about last year and he said that I should be getting about 300h/p from the motor, it was a 355 motor that was complete and all that was needed was intake. Being a engine novice I took his word and bought the motor from him. Before dropping the motor in my T/A I decided to post the specs of the motor I bought from him on here and to my surprise the feed back that I got from the users indeed were upsetting. Many users said that with the specs of the engine I bought I would probably be getting about 200h/p as opposed to the 300 like what was advertised. Well since then I have sold the engine and the guy who I sold it to says it runs pretty well. So now Im thinking about getting another motor from the guy but this time im going to post the specs and get feedback first before I buy.
The motor that he has posted now is a 355 motor and he has it advertised as it should produce around 340 h/p, Here goes the specs as they are posted on Craigslist:
4.030 malhe pistons
recond x rods
280 480 hyd cam
040 64cc cyl heads
double roller chain
hv 55 oil pump
z/28 springs
new push rods and oil pan
These are the only specs he has listed, do these specs sound like a motor that would be capable of producing 340h/p, I plan on putting my HSR on top.....
PLEASE HELP ME OUT GUYS!!!!
He wants $1750.00 for the motor

Re: 355 Horse Power Estimation!
Problem is, the parts list only tells about 50%, AT BEST, of what a "rebuilt" motor is worth.
The IMPORTANT part is the machine work and overall attention to detail.
If that one is up to snuff in that area, then that's a fair price.
I'd sure want some other cam though... not the best possible match for those old stock heads.
Hard to say about the 340 HP part. Again, details MATTER; things like, which pistons are they really (the brand alone doesn't tell enough), what's the deck clearance, what work was done to the heads, etc.

go there in person, bring your dad and look him in the eyes and ask exactly what has been done to the engine.
Is it basically just a long block that you're gettng? Are any accessories included or manifold and carb?
If it's just a long block, then you are looking at a reman'd/rebuilt long block without a core charge for about $300 less than what the market charges and no core charge so approximately $500-$600 savings
if you want a performance engine, you aint getting one for that money. It might seem like a lot of money to you but to get a completely machined engine done correctly and built for performance for under $2,000 is the stuff that wet dreams are made of; not reality.

Re: 355 Horse Power Estimation!
Sofakingdom I'll get some more info on what exactly has been done to this motor and post I didn't think that was enough info was reading but that's all he had for description.
Torque_is_good all it needs is a intake on top which I could either use the tune port that's on my existing engine or the stealth ram that I bought from a member of this forum and i would just use the accessories thats on my current engine. See that's just the thing I'm not looking for this extremely fast performance engine I'm just looking for something faster then this stock 305 tpi that's in my T/A and that has little get up and go and something I can put money into slowly like a fresh 350...... Is a motor putting out between 300 and 320 h/p considered performance?..... And Thats why I bought a stealth ram because I know that will give it a little more power and get me closer to my 300 hp goal, that's why I was thinking his motor plus my stealth ram would get the job done until I can put some real money into it, if his motor does what it is advertised to do it would actually be more then what I'm looking for honestly(but I wouldn't be upset lol)... and as far as my dad he knows nothing about the performance of a engine lol.... Only thing he knows is how to take them out and drop em back in....

Yes, 300HP plus is where i view as more performance. Dad will be able to tell you if the guy is full of bull which is more valuable than a camshaft. Dad will look him in the eyes and determine if the guy is real or honest.
