yet another hp question

hey guys.....i have look around first but didn't find what i was looking for...i was thinking of gutting the 5.7 and droping in a ls1 or could i get the 300/350 hp out of the orginal for say 3g's..is it worth it?
i'm new to hole v8 building....don't pick... but i'v been into imports, 4&6's for the last 6 years but mostly just replacing pistons and just doing some light porting and polish to increase compression and cams....but v8's there are SO many options... i guess i just don't know where to start....i just want street able with the punch factor

Budget?
LS has more base power ( lots of extras needed for install )
but 350 cheaper to build up if you already have it and its control system
