white smoke out the tail pipes - is it ok to start up?

I am considering selling my car, and am considering selling it 'as-is', with white smoke coming out the tailpipes. when i saw this happened, i shut it down after 30 seconds and havent started it up again. the white smoke only came while having idled. no hard runs or anything. Can i mess anything up while starting it up in its current condition? In selling, I'd assume someone would want to hear it start and such.

had the same problem when i first got my 84. no big serious problem with white smoke, it just means your valve seals are leaking oil into engine and its burning it away on start up. does the smoke go away after it runs for a min or 2? if so then yes its your valve seals. if you can do cylinder head work on your own it will save you tons of money, valve seals are only 10bucks at NAPA or Pepboys and they look like lil rubber cups with a hole in the middle of the bottom.

well, it was actually a *lot* of white smoke ... it was billowing out from what I rmemeber. I didn't give it a chance to see if it would stop or not, as I only let it run for probably 30 seconds or a minute.

white smoke is better than black smoke, in "SOME" cases. in urs, its better. i would let it run til the smoke clears (if it does)

mine smoked really bad on start up after it sat for the night, then throughout the day as i started it couple times here n there it wasnt bad at all.
