Heatercore Hose Routing

Quick question here guys.

What exactly is the top port on a typical SBC waterpump used for? Mine has never been in use since I bought the car and always had a pipe fitting threaded into it so I carried the fitting on over to my new waterpump. Now as you can see in the following photo, the heater diverter valve is long gone from my motor (Work of PO) and the heatercore hose routes over the top of the passenger side valve cover and goes directly to the front of the manifold. This has always seemed to work just fine BTW.

IIRC the function of the diverter valve is to shut off flow to the heatercore when the heat is switched off so you will not have heat radiating into the cabin. Someone correct me if I am wrong. If this is the case however this has never really bothered me and I would gladly sacrifice this minor convenience for the reduced clutter in the engine bay.

I am curious of what the function of that port on the waterpump is because I was wondering if I could plumb the hose going to the heatercore there instead of having it make that sharp turn into the front of the manifold. Thanks guys!

Re: Heatercore Hose Routing

If I am understanding you right, it is for vehicles that dont have a port for the heater hose on the radiator.

In those instances, you run a hose from the intake port, to the heater core, back to the water pump.

If you run it from the pump to the radiator it will be flowing in the reverse direction that it is now and will be cooler. The coolant would be coming from the coolside of the radiator, through the heater core, and into the water pump.

From intake works better.
