gm crate engine 350/290

hi just wondering what anyone thoughts are about the gm crate engine 350/290 hp i was going to rebuild the original 305 ho to put back into my 83 camaro but for just a small little more money this engine has goten my attention , my friend just bought one for his cutless so i looked it over the threaded hole in on left side of the blockfor the manual trans linkage pivot and the starter holes are staight the same as mine and it is a two piece rear engine oil seal engine so it looks as if my 153 flywheel will bolt on any info or has anyone used this engine and does anyone know what color the engine in third gen camaros is as this block comes black or should i go ahead and repaint orange thanks sheldon

It's a good motor for the price. I have the 260 hp version. The only thing different between the two is the cam. If you are buying it brand new then the price difference between the two motors does not justify getting the 290 hp version. You can put a better cam in it yourself for less.

That being said, these are low compression motors. Expect to replace the heads to get anything past 300 hp. In fact the compression sucks so much you'll probably loose bottom end if you cam it too much.

PS. They only get the rated HP with headers, free flowing exhaust and intake manifold. HP rating is at the crank.

good lord... Its amazing they are able to make a 350 CI engine only put out 240 to the crank in stock form.

Obviously never bought a '70's 350 engine
