gas gauge acting weird

(this is for my 86 firebird with a 305)
recently i've noticed my gas gauge giving weird readings, it will read empty then if i put the key in the on position it will give a random reading like 1/4 of a tank or full, i know nither of the readings are right because the car is nearly out of gas....
has anyone else had this problem?

Re: gas gauge acting weird

Mine was real bad when somebody hack jobbed a fuel pump job in my car; it always read way above full. Fixed the fuel pump problem and the gauge is better, but not perfect. It fluctuates, and if you give it gas the gauge goes up a bit, reading more full. I have 2 or 3 spare gas gauges that i plan to try to see if they are any different, but im waiting to do thhat until i get a new tach (mines shot). So maybe go to a junkyard a get one for a few bucks and try it. The gauge should work as long as its not pointing straight up or down. (junkyard one) or buy a new one, up to you.
