1982 trans am wont advance timing
so heres the deal, i have a 1982 trans am that orginally had the 305 crossfire in it. i pulled it out along with the trans and put a 350 tbi and 700r4 in.
when i start it up it sounds amazing but when i take it on the road and give it some gas it starts missing like crazy and i have no power. it also sounds like its missing when i rev it at idle. so i replaced the control moduel under the cap and rotor and now it seems like it is running a bit better. but when i go to put it in gear it just dies. so i try to advance my timing by turnung my cap and my r's wont go up. like i cant get it to go past 1000 rs at idel.
so i guess my main question is why wont my r's go up when i try to advance it?
i took the distributor off my 305 and put in it the 350. think that could be the problem?
when i time it to 0 degrees my r's are at 500.

Are you actually using a timing gun and watching the timing mark? It's pretty much impossible to physically turn the distributor body and NOT get a change in timing.
Also wondering, just for sake of understanding your combo, what distributor are you using? Large cap computer controlled HEI (like the CFI engine originally came with), large cap NON-computer controlled HEI (no connection to the computer) or small cap computer controlled HEI? Whether it came from a 305 or a 350 doesn't matter. It's whether it matches the ECM and wiring you have trying to run it that matters.
