Suggestions on installing oil cooler

My car is an 88 iroc w/350tpi. It has the factory heat-exchange oil cooler but i saw an radiator-style oil cooler on a cadillac at a junkyard and decided to buy it, it was only $3. I think it would be a good idea to do this, it should help considerably, and i really cant see it hurting any. (I live in NC and it gets pretty hot here sometimes, not to mention these cars can see temps of 220*)

Mounting it shouldnt be a problem, im wondering about what lines i can hook it up to. Any ideas/suggestions?

Im also considering getting a ps cooler, i dont take it to the track, but sometimes i like to have some fun Ive read it will help extend pump life too. Installing this shouldnt be an issue.

Re: Suggestions on installing oil cooler

As long as the engine oil cooler has a functional temperature controlled sandwich adapter ( opining at 180*)than you should be fine. A transmission oil cooler is also nice to have and requires no temp. controlled unit because it runs all the time.. By the way you can only use hoses that are rated for trans/engine oil.I bought a Derale engine/transmission oil combo cooler that measures 12.5in tall and 17in. wide and is set up on the backside of the radiator with the single stock puller fan(on at stock setting) mounted over that, also with a 16' pusher fan in front of the condenser as my primary set with a adjustable fan switch. The cooler has some weight to it so be sure to mount it well.

Perfectly normal considering the radiator fan is not programmed to run until approx 228F

Re: Suggestions on installing oil cooler

Its functional to my knowledge, but I only say that because I dont know if it is or isnt working (assuming it is). My oil pressure gauge is flakey, its always at the very bottom and only goes up slightly at about half throttle. My tach doesnt work either, so i think its just that theyre both screwed up. Ive never found any metal shavings or other signs showing i have low oil pressure when i change the oil, so i have always thought it was ok.

Thats a nice one, whered you get it? How much was it? If thats relatively inexpensive I may buy that and put the one I already got on as the ps cooler.

I know this, mine are actually wired to run constantly (previous owner, if it was up to me I would have it set up to a toggle switch & to still operate at stock temperatures until I get it tuned, then Id drop the temp it kicks on to about 195 and shut off at about 180 i think. Ill get around to doing this one of these days)

Thats a good read though, I think what im going to do is just switch to synthetic oil. Ive always used conventional and changed it religiously, but from what I read, if i understand correctly, a synthetic oil can handle the heat range i will see with no problem, so an oil cooler is probably not necissary. Am I correct? Is there any problem with a "high miles" (105k) engine running on synthetic? (I havent heard of any, but would like to make sure before switching.) Ive heard that synthetics arent as good at cold temperatures, is this true?

I will still put a trans and ps cooler on though.
