can anyone help me wire up a vintage tach?

So I bought this autometer tach off ebay. I bought it used but was not aware that this is a old style tach. it has 3 wires only no green wire. just 2 black one red. My question is can you wire this up to a third gen. if so can someone help me figure this out. See pic Below

red to switched power
one side to good chassis ground
the other side to negative side of the coil or tach pick-up location. I think on the 87-up GM small-cap distrib., there's a tach buffer on the firewall, that might do it.
