My current junkyard jewel project.

It's a '79 350 with only 43K miles on it. Heads are '624 castings, probably cracked judging by the extreme white smoke upon start-up. I scored a pair of used '906 Vortecs. Head gaskets will be FelPro 1094 steel-shims. Intake will be the GMPP Performer EGR for Vortecs. Cam will be Comp's 12-235-2 at first. Stock '88 700R-4 from an LO3 'maro, stock matching torque converter from same. 3.42:1 axle, 235/60R15s on 7.5" wheels. Exhaust system pending. Accel 59107C dizzy, Moroso wires, Accel shorty plugs. Q-Jet of course. Probably going to start with stock exhaust manifolds, Hooker dual 2.25" mandrel-bent and Chinese chambered muffs from Summit, probably add cats. This is going to be an emissions-legal build on the cheap, the car will be weighed, and I will be posting pics of the porting, then I'll be posting the results from the local chassis dyno shop, and the local dragstrip. This project may stretch out a full year, depending on my health. This isn't my car, it's a father and son project I'm managing for some clueless friends. Along the way, it needs new rear springs, new door hinge pins / bushings, and probably more. The goal is nothing more than 25 MPG cruising and plenty of fun.

Re: My current junkyard jewel project.

Those 906s were cracked, I found 2 more. Porting, new 1.94 / 1.60" valves, and pics beginning this week. I'll be re-doing my previous thread on how to port Vortecs, with new trips to the same old SuperFlow 1020, only this time it won't be me operating it. Oh well. Exhaust system is purchased and sitting here in new boxes, recently delivered from Summit. Summit long-tube headers, Hooker Competition 2.25" dual mandrel-bent exhaust, and Summit's Chinese Flowmaster-copy muffs. Not trying stock exhaust manifolds at all. Gaskets are here, so are: intake manifold, carb, dizzy, wires, plugs, gears, wheels, tires, trans. Rear springs are done, new from Summit, and new KYB shocks are here in box from Summit. Still waffling on the cam, since no exhaust manifold testing. If it was mine I'd use Isky's 214/214-108. For HP I'm wanting comp's 218/224-110, and any of these should pass emissions. But I'm wanting instant torque without a 2400-stall. Probably stick with the 12-235.

Intersting build.

I have to ask one question though, on a budget build like this, why go with the Accel Shorty plugs? Im running a set of champions right now that are very close to the size of the Accel but are only $1.25 each. Just curious your reason for their use.

Re: My current junkyard jewel project.

Sorry no progress, been a heck of a winter. I do my porting in my basement, which has been flooding for months, even with pumping it every morning and night. Otherwise I'd be showing an every-smallest-detail porting tutorial on the Vortecs while I have nothing better to do. I keep waffling on the cam for this project, since none has been installed in the block yet. If you're going to do it, may as well get the most improvement that is realistically practical, right? The car has the 3.42:1 gears installed, the 700R-4 is not in, still the TH200c which will break, so it could still get a 2600-stall from Summit. The heads could still be milled 0.030" for compression, they could still get the back-cut and undercut 1.60" exhaust valves I already have, and the XE262H10 will pass an emissions test here.
