Too Much?

hey guys...currently working on my first build...heres what im working with.
91 l98 vortec heads with screw in studs, 1.6 pro magnum rockers, alexs parts valves, and springs to clear for .550 lift
sitting on a SDPC intake Ported, and SLP runners siamesed.

ordering a set of .030 Keith black flat top pistons, and having the block taken over. reusing the stock rods and crank. although I am having the block tanked and all new bearings.

also keeping original 3.42's and a 2500k stall.

now here is the question. I originally I was swapping in a 96 LT1 cam, however after reading up about cams and realizing there really is no point to swapping it in I've been looking at Lunati. after calling Lunati explaining my build and goals the Tech suggested this.

does anyone think im going a little overboard? I want a rough idle and power up top...i was told this cam Would deliver both. im tired of falling flat on my face as soon *** i get out of the hole. and I love the aggresive ide of the Lunati Cams.

Re: Too Much?

Think that cam is a little big for vortec heads and stock rods. I am running the Comp Cams XR276HR (http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=188&sb=2) behind a set of vortec heads and it's a very strong combination... possibly about as strong as you can go and still safely do so.

I'd give Comp Cams a call. Those guys are very helpful and smart. They actually tried talking me into a cam that was a step below what I wanted but for the sake of it being a street/strip burnout warrior, I couldn't help but stick with what I wanted.

I honestly think that Lunati cam wouldn't start making more power until 4,500-5,000 RPM. You might be able to squeak out a few more ponies but you'll have to spin it a few hundred RPM more.

Re: Too Much?

Too big for the heads in terms of clearing the lift? or they dont flow well enough?

really think the cam wont lay down power until 4500?

the Guy from Lunati seemed to think this would be a nice combo. after i told hm what i was looking for.(like i said earlier. nice top end, obnoxious idle) he did suggest beefing up a few components to accomidate.

also saw those Hypereutectic flat top pistons arent a safe bet. something about not dealing to well with detonation. would those be unwise with an egr delete?

Re: Too Much?

if the 60122 is too much would this get the job done?

Re: Too Much?

Hypereutectic pistons will do just fine. You shouldn't be facing detonation if you are tuned right anyway.Realistically any piston will fail due to serious detonation; it's just a matter of how much time a certain piston can withstand the abuse for. If you are paranoid of detonation due to the compression with flat top pistons, running a forged flat top wouldn't change anything. I'm running 9.5:1 in my S10 and a 100-150 shot using the stock hypereutectic vortec pistons. I'd be more paranoid about my stock rods/rod bolts handling anything much higher than 6,000 RPM safely and repetitively.

And you did not understand me correclty, as opposed to the CC 276HR, your cam won't make more power until 4,500ish RPMs and will also want to rev a bit higher on the top end just to a significant (maybe 10 horses) over the 276HR. I just don't think it's worth losing bottom end to gain a tad more power in the last 1,800-2,000 RPM.

Your new choice of cam is a better selection, however I don't know why you have your mind set on a Lunati cam. If I were running anything other than a custom grind, I would speak to Comp Cams. They hands down have the best customer service and technical support. They use the same (roughly) 8 guys to answer all calls -- not to mention they are all engine builders.
