Re: New 383 smoking...

When I break-in a new motor, i have a temperature gun. Make sure oil level is correct and not overfilled. Coolant full, good fuel, start the engine, check guages, use temperature gun and exhaust will read 300 to 475 degrees. If 1 is very low its dead, if one is very high 600 + its major lean. Stop. If all ok, keep it running and monitor guages. Set timing adjust mixture if carb. Read air fuel with wideband, 12.5 to 13.5, then create a vacuum leak for about 2 to 5 seconds, then plug it for 30 seconds, over and over till it stops smoking. Some time 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. I then drive it easy varing speed 40 to 50, with easy accelleration, while driving, every 30 to 120 seconds let off the gas completely for 10 seconds to suck oil up to the rings, do this for about 2 hours. At 500 miles change the oil and be moderate on the throttle for the first 2000 miles some full throttle ok for a few seconds, then change to full synthic oil and drive like hell.
