Thinking about a small block 454?? Opinions??
Hey guys how has everyone been?? Im gonna be great.....eventually, I finally finished getting that holley HP efi system hooked up which made my car run so nice!!! I really love it but when I took it to the street drags I managed to throw a rod and the 700r4 Ive had built decided to take a trip with it.
So now that winter is coming I've been looking at building a better drivetrain First I'm gonna get a 9" rear end with probably a 3.50 rear gear, Second a driveshaft that can withstand gobs of power, Third I'm gonna throw that bloody 4 speed auto out( Its been built a few times and just wont stay together) and get a T-56 6 speed installed and then for the motor I was really leaning towards a 454 small block, this one:

and use my intake and any other parts like the balancer, dizzy etc, etc and since Ive got the holley system installed I could just make another calibration. Oh and grab a set of like 36 or 40 pound injectors too!! What do you guys think of that? with something like that would it be necessary for a cage in the rear??

Not a street friendly engine IMO opinion unless its using a Iron eagle 9.325" block, with a big stroke the piston speed will be through the roof, Its going to have a very short piston which will make it more unstable and harder on piston rings. And that kind of ci needs a big cylinder head, way more than your HSR will support. I will want something like a Victor EFI intake with a single 4 bbl throttle body. If it was me I would do something with a 4.125" to 4.185 bore with a 3.875" stroke, far more streetable and will put you somewhere in the 414-426ci range(depending on bore) it will last longer, be far less maintenance, be more reliable and I guarantee for that price it has mediocre parts in it, and a cylinder that can no where near support the ci.

Available in 4.125 inch bores,9.025 deck heights...
Yet the summit page says it has a 4.25 inch bore, 4 inch stroke.... And the motown site says not to exceed a 4.2 inch bore. But at 4.2 it has a .250 wall thickness.
Did they really exceed the manufacturer's maximum bore just to hit the 454 number? I mean I could see a guy in his garage doing it, but I find it exceedingly odd that a crate engine company would do that. Maybe there's another motown block that isnt on WP's page...

Never mind the fact that the common wall would be so thin I doubt the head gaskets would ever seal, seems like a hokey combo to me.

Agreed. Unless you are shooting for some off the wall hp combo, i'd back off the 454 idea and move into a more typical 3.875" stroke deal. 4" is ok with lower rpms for street duty but needs good parts and pay attention to piston rings. Actually theres nothing a good 406 3.75 stroke combo cant do in a street car. Easily a 600 hp motor with right parts. Is there a need for more on pump gas?

Personally though for $9,000 you could build something more "normal" and probably get the same, if not more, power.

Touche
If you have 9k to buy a crate id just buy one of the gm crates like a ls3 or similar ls and cam it. Much better street platform
