Pickup Coil

Figure Id post this here too. I'm trying to diagnose a bad pickup coil on a 89 formula 350, have seen correct ohm specs to be 500-1500 and 800-1500 ohms, mine tested 780 ohms, but cranking ac volts were low, 0.798 ac volts. from what i could find should be closer to 3.000 volts ac, so would you guys agree the pickup coil is bad? Thanks for looking, and sorry if this is the wrong section.

Re: Pickup Coil

And just to add, it has a crank but no start problem. Will start with starting fluid and run great after that. Fuel pressure is good. No SES codes. Dont think its vats since security light goes off like it should, and doesnt come on while running.

Re: Pickup Coil

I had the same problem as you. Try lkg at "my nitemare 89 ta" thread. In the end it turned out to be the third or fourth p/u coil.

Re: Pickup Coil

The SM for 1991 says pickup coil resistance 500-1500. Since yours is easily within that range I probably wouldn't suspect it as the problem.

Re: Pickup Coil

Thanks for the replys guys, the easy diagnostic link is one i had found the specs at, and ya it seems in range so its probably not it. There was a thread on carcraft about testing the icm and pc, and it said should be near 3v ac cranking, and if under 2 it was bad, while the link up there says .3-1.8v ac to be in spec. Has anyone seen an ICM cause a no start while cranking, but run perfectly fine after you get it running on starting fluid? whtlng89, did your pickup coil(s) test bad or test okay and were still the problem? thanks for the help.

Re: Pickup Coil

All I can say for sure is when the ICM in my car went bad it wouldn't run at all. No way, no how.

A bad fuel pump relay can cause long cranking times and many will give up before the car starts, but usually that sets a code...54, I think.

Re: Pickup Coil

Ive been screwwing with the car for over two years. It might start 50 times then all the sudden it will crank but no spark. This last time it had a new dizzy in it and it started doing this all over again. The p/u coil said it was good, but for the price of one I thought I would try it anyway. It worked. I just hope the problem is finally solved.

Re: Pickup Coil

Im just going to end up putting a pickup coil in it and see what happens. I also read somewhere else if you have a no start problem (and have fuel & spark) and you disconnect the EST plug, and it starts, means the pickup is bad? Is it bypassing it or something with the ecm? Anyone else hear/experience this? Thanks for the help guys.
