what do I need?
what do I need?
Hi all, im looking to drop a cam in my engine. im looking at this one... ( i called comp cams and they recommended this one. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-08-501-8
I also came across this one... http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-08-465-8
Which one is "better"? I want a cam that i dont need to tune my engine for and that i dont have to change my entire valve train. The main question here is what else do I need? lifters, retainers, valve springs? Is there any kits with it all there? If so, can you put a link here. thanks!

I assume the engine is a tune port? Yes you will need to retune. New valve springs will help the engine rev to redline. The stock tune port may be too restrictive for the 08-501-8 cam.

TPI imposes considerable restrictions on the cam, unless LOTS of modifications are done to it.
The "501" s well nown to work well with TPI in alot of mostly stock combo situations.
That XFI cam would work well with it too; but you're not going to just "drop it in". MASSIVE valve train upgrades would be required to accommodate it. The 501 can at least be used without major head work. The XFI will require machine work.
Either one however will ABSOLUTELY REQUIRE upgrading the valve springs; no ifs, ands, buts, further questions, "I'm on a budget" whining, or ANYTHING ELSE. Follow the mfrs recommendations at the bare minimum.
