Sush thing as too much timing..?

Alright Im not to sure on this but on my 84 z I got the timing advanced to 11-12 degrees. Would it be bad if I bumped it up even more?

some mods... Hooker headers, 3" staright pipes, flowmaster muffler, edelbrock intake manifold.

Re: Sush thing as too much timing..?

Old skool way of setting carb timing.
Crank the advance up (gradually) , then go for a test drive loading the engine up ( up a hill say in 4th ) without shifting down.
If engine pings under load ,then TOO much timing.
Increase timing until you get ping under load , then back it off a tad and retest
That is the most timing your engine combo can handle

Re: Sush thing as too much timing..?

Typically in the neighborhood of 36 degrees total. I run 40 degrees peak on my turbo Datsun but thats just because the static compression ratio is 7.5:1.

Try it and see. You can always put it back.

The engine does not whup out a "light", compare a "mark" to a "tab", check to see what wrinkles the sheet metal around it has in it, "look it up" in some "book", and then decide how it's going to run. No, it's mucj simpler than that. IT KNOWS when it's getting what it likes.

Give it what it likes. Whatever that is.

"If it RUNS good, is IS good". And equally, if it runs BETTER some other way, then that way is BETTER.

It's called TUNING. Not sure how 4-cyl econoboxes with fart mufflers and crude fabricated wings and bumper covers that don't fit, came to be known as "tuner" cars; TUNING is all about making a motor RUN AS GOOD AS IT CAN, not all that other stuff.
