custom fuel pump setup outside of tank?
Is it possible or has anyone already done it so that the fuel pump is outside of the tank somewhere like in older style cars?
just curious.

On a thirdgen there is a baffle in the tank to help prevent cavitation durning acceleration and hard cornering. You can sump a tank or instal a surge tank if the gravity feed is still causing pump cavitation.

Re: custom fuel pump setup outside of tank?
I've burned up two Holley Black pumps trying to use the factory fuel fuel lines in the span of 6 months. The fuel lines come up and out of the tank, so fuel goes back into the tank causing the pump to run dry every time you cold start the car. This causes excessive heat and ruined both my pumps. I originally installed the new pumps because my new engine block wasn't drilled for a mechanical pump. After dropping near $400 for two pumps, I went with an intank pump. 3 years now and no issues. I would recommend against external pumps.

Re: custom fuel pump setup outside of tank?
I was just wondering what is involved in relocating the pump because I just had my first fuel pump experience in my POS Grand am 2004 at only 77k miles.
$860 to replace the pump because its inside the tank.
then my dad and his buddies talk about how its like $120-160 for a pump for their older cars back in the day and how they could replace the pump themselves because it wasnt in the tank.
and i have a 1986 trans am, 136,000 miles on it still stock pump but i dont know for how long and just was curious of options of avoiding the B.S. of dropping the tank.
I don't trust newer parts, they NEVER!!!!! last as long as stock parts no matter what version you buy or how much you spend.
i don't have a lift so dropping the tank when the time comes will be so much of a pain if possible at all in my own garage.
and i am alll for doing a hack job and cutting a back door in the trunk area but then i gota hack up the fuel lines and install fresh fuel line connectors.
so basically what I am suggesting, once my stock trans am pump goes I have a feeling I will be replacing the pump more often meaning the next one won't last another 130,000 miles. and i just would like to be able to swap it out EASILY!

Re: custom fuel pump setup outside of tank?
It took me and a friend the better part of 9 hours to drop the rear, drop the tank, install and wire the intank pump and then put everything back up. I had air tools (life saver) and I used two jacks, 5 jackstands, and alot of beer. My car didn't originally come with an in-tank pump, but I got tired of eating after market pumps. IF you go aftermarket in-line, make sure you mod your fuel tank to have a sump at the bottom of the tank where the fuel comes out. This way the fuel is gravity feeting to the in-line fuel pump so it never runs dry.
