Rear end vibration help

When making a left turn I get a vibration when I hit second. It does not do it on a straight run and only once and a while making a right. Trans is a 700r4.
I let off right away because it feels kke something is going to break. Feels like it is in the passenger side Wheel is tight. Shock? Bearing? Rear end? Any guidance would be most appreciated

Re: Rear end vibration help

I read the thread and my problem is different. I don't experience any issues other than when I hit second after stopping when I turn left. I did change out the U Joints recently. Is it possible I have a U joint hanging up or out of wack?

What caused you to change the U-joints?

Re: Rear end vibration help

Consider too, that a vibration that occurs right when the transmission shifts from first gear to second gear could be a clue that the transmission is the source of the unwelcome vibration.

I don't pretend to offer any explanation as to why a transmission issue would only display symptoms when turning in a particular direction. But then I don't understand how an imperfectly installed U-joint would be a source of vibration on low-speed turns, and only in one direction, and only right as the transmission changes gears.

If its not a bent axle,... and its not a bad axle bearing,... and its not bad differential,... and its not a bad drive shaft...

Can only go upstream from there.

If the transmission is going bad, the "usual procedure" is to just replace the whole trans before it completely fails out on the road. By "usual procedure," I mean that it is a very, very tiny group of enthusiasts who are going to pull the trans, and comb through it for the culprit before the rest of the trans is ruined. Lot of drivers, myself included, generally drive an automatic transmission until it fails dramatically, or until the driveability reachs a point where it is intolerable.

Still, it won't cost you anything but your time to get up under the car, and inspect what you can see, and maybe take a look anyway at those axles. I'm still suspect that the vibration occurs only when the weight of the car is shifted to a particular side. A bad axle carrying all the load might bark at you when the weight shifts. Although, I really can't explain why it wouldn't bark when the car is in a higher gear, and at higher speed.

...which gets us back to the issue of the vibration only happening when the trans shifts from first to second.

Re: Rear end vibration help

I'd check for worn out rear suspension mounts, shifting axles can cause lots of issues. Then I'd check the brakes, bearings, and diff, closely examine the spider gears or if its a limited slip it probably needs to be rebuilt. All of these things should show at othertimes as well though.

Highly doubt its u-joint related, they usually show themselves in a coast situation at a certain shaftspeed, or when the angles get way out. Trans internals would definitely be the last place I'd look being the most work and seemingly least likely culprit.

Re: Rear end vibration help

Thank you for all the feedback. I changed the unjointed because it was clunking when I put car in reverse. Clunking is gone.

Car is never driven hard and don't recall anything that would cause an bent axle

Vibration is for sure in the rear. Most of the times it is on left turns but it has happened on right to a lesser extent. Maybe because I accelerate harder taking off to the left as I am going across traffic. I will crawl under it and look around.

The vibration feels like something is binding up.

Re: Rear end vibration help

Make sure that ujoint is tight. More than once I have had a lose one, and it causes all kinds of vibrations at different times. Also, do you still get the clunk from the rear after replacing it? If so, the big pin going thru the center section may have play it, seen that allot.

Re: Rear end vibration help

Pulled the drive shaft and checked my new unjoints. They were tight, do not bind and were slotted properly. Checked suspension and everything is snug. Note. Shocks and sway bar bushings were changed last year.

I am guessing I need to start digging into the rear end. That is beyond my capabilities and tool box. I am tempted to jump on it and break it just so I can figure out what is wrong. LOL
