Starting issue
Ok, my 89 IROC 5.7 TPI just started doing something and it's getting on my nerves. Just wondering if anyone has had the same issue and what did you do to fix it.
I get in, turn the key, listen for the fuel pump to energize (I hear a buzz for one second or so) then start the engine and all is good. BUT sometimes, like 2 or 3 times a day, I get in, turn the key and don't hear the 'buzz", turn the key and the engine starts but idles too rough (rpm's go from 100-2000 back and forth) then when I put it in drive the engine shuts off.
Then I turn the key a couple of times, and wait till I hear the "buzz" from the fuel pump, at that point it starts up and runs like the day it rolled off the showroom floor with NO issues.. and short, if I don't hear the buzz sound from the fuel pump, I ain't going anywhere..
was just wondering if you guys have gone thru this too... I bought a fuel pump relay, just waiting to get back home to change it out, if thats what the issue is. Stone

Re: Starting issue
The fuel pump relay could possibly be the issue and another thing could be the fuel pump itself. If it isnt priming i would suspect it to be a culprit as well.

Re: Starting issue
It does prime, but sometimes.. if it's not in the mood to prime it won't. My mechanic says when a pump goes bad it stays bad. Bought a $15 relay. Hopefully that'll fix the issue. Stone

Axle/Gears: Stock? Lol
No your possibly looking at a fuel pump. Is it a little harder to start in the mornings? Have you changed your filter lately? I had a bad filter kill my new fuel pump in 2 weeks.

Re: Starting issue
A pump can either die completely(which eventually does happen), or as it is going out you will get erratic function.

Re: Starting issue
It's random, engine cold or normal. Outside temp cold or normal. Where's the filter? Thought if a pump goes bad it stays bad til it's changed.. Of course since I bought the new relay it hasn't done it ( not installed yet) stone
