Made a Mistake
So I got this Lucas transmission fluid treatment for my car, and my little brother wanted to help so he put it in my car for me. Then I find out he put it where the steering fluid goes. He put in a good amount, like half the bottle. I'm hoping its not that big of a deal, but I want to make sure it's not going to damage anything. Should i be worried/any advice?
Re: Made a Mistake
The power steering system is a hydraulic system, just like the transmission. It uses similar seals, a vane pump, and valving like the trans. While it probably hasn't (and won't) cause any damage, the viscosity is likely not what should be in the PS system. As a precaution (and as part of regular 100K maintenance) it might not be a bad idea to use a suction gun to empty the reservoir as must as possible, then remove the low pressure return line at the reservoir to drain as much as possible, then refill with the proper power steering hydraulic oil. After a few months of running, and before cooler temperatures arrive in fall, drain it again and refill to make sure it is all out, and that extra thick oil won't be in there for cooler temperature operation.
And I thought that I was the only one who changed PS fluid as a maintenance item.
