Hey guys, has anyone swapped an older style power steering pump into a third gen? I have an 86 camaro and I swapped in a Keyway power steering pump from the early 70's. I have a bracket that would work but the pressure hose from the steering box to the pump is not compatible. The end does not thread into the pump. Can I just buy an older style pressure hose?

 

Why not just get the right PS pump?

I suspect you'll find that the old one won't work; good chance it'll hit the steering gear.

 

You can swap the pressure regulator assembly & parts between the two pumps. They just thread in, and doing that will allow you to use the same hose.

Just be careful when removing it, it is under light spring pressure.

So basically I can swap parts from the metric pump to the keyway pump and use the keyway pump case?

 

I don't know about the case. I thought the keyway case's were smaller then the canned ham cases. Although, they may be taller... Narrower, but possibly taller, but they swap over too.

As far as the pressure valve, yes, they interchange, I have a '85 Camaro pressure regulator set up in my '67 keyway pulley P/S pump. Made it easy to get the proper flow & pressure, along with a hose to match the '91 Trans Am box that I installed.

Just be sure to use all of the '86 pressure valve parts in the older P/S pump. You'll see what I mean once you remove the valve assembly.

Yeah, just to get everyone up to speed though, the reason for the swap is I am using an aftermarket pulley and bracket kit from March performance. This kit will only work with keyway style pumps, thus the delema. I also hear allegedly that the car can be run without a power steering pump if you connect both return and pressure lines and run just the steering box as one continuous loop.
