I have an 85 Iroc z with the 305 TPI in it. Run the car for 5 or 10 mins. slow down and or stop the ckeck engine ligth comes on and upon acceleration the car bogs down runs like crap, really rich. It will clear itself and run better sometimes and sometimes not. The codes have been checked, comes up 32 and 34. The 32 code is egr failure. Replaced the egr, am still get the code. Code 34 is the mass air flow sensor. Have checked the wiring, the connector and cleaned it, the gound, everything comes up good. Unplug the connector ran even worse. Took cleaner and cleaned the maf that didn't do any good. I'm at a loss. Checking fuel perssure tonite. Looking for help!

 

Is the air filter(s) clean, no obstructions in the intake? If that is OK I would try a new O2 sensor, it controls the mixture. The o2 sensors are not real expensive like new cars.
You only have 18 posts, so I'm thinking you have not had this car for a long time.
What did you get for fuel pressure? Vac connected and not.

 

Not had the car very long. This all started when the weather started getting cold in Dec. Wouldn't the o2 sensor throw a code if it were bad? Didn't get a chance to check the fuel pressure. My wife had other plans. Got to keep the peace.

 

The OBD system in your car is a very early version, so it's not as sensitive or accurate as a new cars OBD. The codes they throw are more like clues rather than exact diagnosis. The way to really know if the O2 sensor is working right is to put a scan tool on it and watch it cross count. Other possibilities for running very rich are leaking injectors, too high of fuel pressure.

 

Does this car have 2 coolant temp. sending units. One to the gauge and one to the ecm?

 

My manual shows 2 temp sensors. One for the ECM, one for the gauge.

 

Where are the 2 sensors located. I think I found one but not sure. The one going to the ecm could be the cause of the the problem. PLEASE HELP! The car is really sucking down the gas. At 3.60 a gallon my wife is having a fit. Got to find a fix or the car is going bye-bye. I'm desperate! Don't want to get rid of it.
