quick evap canister question - pls help

for anyone familiar with the evap system, i have 3 hoses going into my evap canister on my 89 formula. I would only expect there to be 2. One hose from the tank to the canister, another hose from the canister to the throttle body. i noticed there was a third hose, unplugged, just hanging out with an elbow for another...any idea what this third one is for? pic attached of the hose and the write up in the manual. is this the air inlet? why stick a hose over it?

That's the inlet air. Usually has a plastic cap with a cavity underneath. The hose does just as well.

Some diagrams show more than 2 hoses. There is a separate thread I responded to this morning titled all vacuum diagrams which shows in post 33 multiple hoses connecting to the canister. I can't post pic on phone but will tn
