'84 Z28 5.0L HO Emissions Question

So, I got my wife's Z up and running after sitting idle for 13 years. Runs great. Anyway, I'm looking at the engine, and I see this emissions hose connected to a filter (?) and not going anywhere else. My wife informed me that the engine had been rebuilt, and apparently, the mechanic didn't button everything back. Anyone have any idea what this is and what it's supposed to be connected to? (See pic. )

Re: '84 Z28 5.0L HO Emissions Question

That's actually a muffler, for when the diverter valve diverts the AIR pump's output to the atmosphere, instead of into the exhaust. Which it does for a brief time upon sudden closing of the throttles. (hence the name, "diverter valve")

Oh, cool. So, it's good the way it is? Looks like it mounts to the side of the radiator overflow container. And thanks for the response! Greatly appreciated.

Would you mind supplying another picture that shows the additional components such as the diverter valve around that muffler to show how those are mounted? My setup looks completely different than what your pic shows. This is what mine looks like.

Re: '84 Z28 5.0L HO Emissions Question

Believe I have it figured out. The diverter valve was rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise by someone, and really all I need to do is to rotate it back to the original position and mount the "muffler" to the bracket the way it's show in the first pic. I don't know why I didn't realize this, sooner. I probably would have, but I've been pre-occupied with other things all summer.
