Two Fuel Pumps

I have an 87 Trans Am that has two fuel pumps. One electric in tank and a mechanical on the block. This is the carb version 305. Why did they use two pumps? The electric died and I'm wondering if you can get away with just the mechanical.

Thanks!

The in-tank pump is a booster pump used to help prevent vapor locking.

The last car that had your setup, I eliminated the mechanical pump, installed a TPI pump and sending unit in the tank, and used a bypass style return regulator on the firewall to limit the pressure down to 5 psi.

Re: Two Fuel Pumps

You'll have vapor locking problems. The electrical pump was there to keep the line primed going to the mechanical pump, if that makes sense.

Re: Two Fuel Pumps

Do they still sell these off the shelf? Or do you have to use the higher pressure throttle body pump?

Rock Auto has the low pressure pumps dirt cheap.

This is my set up. Ditched the mechanical and in-tank pusher pump because my pusher pump was D.E.D..dead.

Re: Two Fuel Pumps

I already have the tank down, so I'll go with replacing the "pusher" in the tank. Thanks so much for the quick replies...this board ROCKS!
