Asking for advice
im still learning as much as i can about cars everyday, i am no expert. i own a 1990 iroc z 5.7L. ive been running into some issues since ive had the car. the person i bought it from was kinda sketch so i dont really know how well the car was treated. i wanna keep this car for a really long time, i love Irocs. i really just want to know what are some things i can run in too that may cause issues for how old this car is, i know the question is pretty general. my brother owns a engine shop and he had his guys rebuild my engine. i also had the tranny (700r4) rebuilt by a reputable mechanic. the car has 112k miles on it. i know how to work on cars a decent amount so theres nothing i wont try, thats what the internet is there for. is there any things i can look for to tell if certain things are going bad, signs i should look for, certain maintenance that should be done that doesnt really fall into the regular catagory such as oils and filters. all help is much appreciated. figure all you 3rd gen experts know more then me so i thought id post a thread, sorry if it may be in the wrong catagory

Re: Asking for advice
There's not much about these cars that's very different from any others, as far as stuff like that goes.
Brakes, shocks/struts, the cooling system, etc. all seem to be pretty much deteriorated and need maintenance in cars this old. Expect anything rubber, like suspension bushings, to be ready to crumble to dust most any time. After all, it'll officially be an antique (25 yrs old) in most states around Labor Day when the 2015 models come out.
Greasing everything and changing all the fluids (rear end fluid for example) usually hasn't been done to them in decades. Catch up on some of that "deferred maintenance".

Vats always seems to be an issue in these cars. You may want to disable it if it hasn't been done already.
The other big issue because of the age/mileage is the fuel system. I would replace the injectors and fuel pump if it hasn't been done yet.

Fuel pumps usually don't give much warning when going bad. There is really no way to know, but it may be worth changing it out so you know what you have if you are concerned about reliability. If you still have the original pump it the odds of it lasting a lot longer probably aren't good. Most people just wait for it to go bad though.
Vats is the anti theft system. The key has a resistor built into it. When you put the key in it looks for the correct resistance, if its not there then it won't allow the car to start. If you do a search there are tons of posts on it and how to disable it if you choose to. The sytem works pretty well when new but 20+ years later its not very reliable.
