canister purge solenoid buzzing?

Greetings - looking for some advice; here's the problem:

- got a stock LG4 with a CC Q-jet on an 84 T/A.
- Got a CEL code 45 (rich exhaust), car still ran fine.
- with paperclip in, turn on ignition, I do not get the usual clicking of the mixture control solenoid (explains my rich exhaust)
- but I do get a loud buzzing further back near the canister purge solenoid.
- when I pull off the electrical connector from the purge solenoid, no more buzzing (and still no M/C solenoid clicking).

I'm guessing I have a bad canister purge solenoid, but before I drop $35 on a new one, is there anything else I should check? Would a bad purge solenoid prevent the ECM from energizing the M/C solenoid, or do I have bigger problems here?

thanks in advance and I appreciate any advice!

Steve

Re: canister purge solenoid buzzing?

Just in case anyone stumbles on this thread in the future: I replaced the purge solenoid but no change and still nothing on the M/C solenoid. Checked the connector and its getting voltage. I should have just replaced the M/C solenoid when I overhauled the carb last spring - lesson learned.
