What is this for?

Does anyone know what this cavity/void is for on the sbc, and if I'm going to be leaking anything from it? It's on the front pass side next to the oil pan under where the mechanical fuel pump would mount and has a small hole at the bottom that I can stick a small screwdriver through.

I do know you have to have a bolt in the front hole or you will have a leak. its the one that you can use to hold the fuel pump rod in when replacing pump

Re: What is this for?

That one and the one right by the starter are the gauge holes that are the first thing the factory drills in a new casting. All other block dimensions - crank centerline, cylinders, decks, bell housing flange, you name it - are derived from those.

Note how the one by the fuel pump has the dimension "0.00".

Can't believe it...I posted it over a year ago, only 11 downloads... goes to show how technical people choose to get...

Re: What is this for?

That is an awesome drawing! I will definitely be downloading that. That was my first thought, that they were probably for some fixturing. Is that small hole in the middle at the bottom going to be a problem for me, or is that like a voided area of the block?

Re: What is this for?

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you can't see through it into the crankcase.
