How many tooth flywheel do I need.
I have a 5.7 700R4. I'm switching it over to a 5 speed and noticed there's a 153 and 168 (I think) tooth standard flywheel available. Which would I need to avoid starter issues? Mines still installed so I can't check right now. I'd like to start getting orders in for this swap.

Changing the pinion would be even more work. If you have a factory bell housing, use a 153-tooth flywheel and pick up a starter from any parts house (mine cost a whole $25 and has a lifetime warranty.) If you are using a scattershield, you can use either flywheel, just make sure to get a starter made for it (stagger bolt pattern for the 168-tooth or inline for the 153-tooth.) Also a consideration, not all blocks are drilled to accept both starters. Of course, which clutch kit you get is also dependent upon which flywheel you use and which input shaft your transmission has. Again, no worries here, just look at what you have and match accordingly.

You night want to check, sometimes when they get replaced, they give out the standard starter at the auto parts store. (they both work on an auto)
It's just a little round on the end where the bolts are.

Correct on the starter. You will need the 153-tooth flywheel. One final question: What did your T5 come out of? If you don't know, then how many splines are on the input shaft and what is its diameter?

In that case, you'll be fine with an off-the-shelf replacement clutch kit.
If you encounter any snags, there are plenty of us who've done the job and are more than willing to help. It is by far the best thing I've ever done to the car; it completely changes its character. You won't regret it.
