Noisy Heater Fan, Found Insulation Stuffed Inside Squirrel Cage. Mice?
Noisy Heater Fan, Found Insulation Stuffed Inside Squirrel Cage. Mice?
Hi,
I was getting a noise on low, and a louder noise on med and high, and even a burning smell, when I turned on the blower motor fan. I removed the blower motor to inspect it and found it stuffed full of grey insulation, looks like thick lint. I had a nest of mice on top of my engine a few years ago, and they built themselves a home with the insulation from the underside of the hood (same grey color).
Could this insulation in the squirrel cage be put there by the mice moving it into the hvac channels, and the wind from the fan sucking it into the squirrel cage?
OK, my real question is: Should there be any insulation in or near the area of the heater fan, inside the ductwork? There is a bunch of it in there still. Hate to throw it out if it is supposed to be there. I can feel something that probably is the a/c condensor (or heater core?) in there.
I removed all the insulation from inside the cage and threw it out, but there's still a lot of it inside the ductwork; just seems to be sitting there, blocking airflow.
BTW, the noise is gone now when I operate the blower motor without the insulation stuffed in it.
Thanks

Yea, most likely mice making their little home. As far as I know the duct work is not insulated. It is just thin plastic tubes of sort.
As for mice, I've had them build nests in the air cleaner. Does that ever make the engine run funny...
RBob.

LOL! Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and just removed all that loose insulation, and put the blower motor back in. No more noise!
