Cranks with no start
I'm not sure if this is in the correct thread, but my 92 L98 cranks with no start. I have a Tech II and it shows 0 rpm when cranking.
Where does the rpm signal come from? I pulled the distributor cap and found what looks like excessive rust around the stater. Also, the outside ring has slack and can be turned about 1/8 a full circle. Is that normal?
The car was doing its weekly run in the garage and it just suddenly died. Luckily I wasn't on the road
There are no trouble codes.
Thanks for any input.

Re: Cranks with no start
Signal comes from the pickup coil (around the outside of the "star wheel"; part of the stator), through its green & white wires to the module where it is conditioned amplified etc. by the signal-level part of the module, out the small plug at the other end of the module to the ECM, back from the ECM into other wires of that same plug and into the high-power half of the module, which fires the coil.
The rust is normal; that piece was bare unfinished steel when new. Doesn't hurt anything.
Not sure what you mean "outside ring". If you're talking about the rusty part that sits over the pickup coil, it doesn't matter if it moves. As long as the "star wheel" teeth are firmly attached, life is good.
Your problem is most likely the module. Pop it out, take it to the parts store, get it tested, go from there.
