Engine overheats after intake gasket replacement

My 92 305 TBI is overheating after replacing the intake gasket. I had a mechanic do the work and he doesn't know. I can't get it over to him due to it getting hot. I replaced the thermostat, and it seemed to work, but the temp gauge fluctuated more than usual. I let the engine cool a bit, started it, and it started to overheat again. The top hose was cool as if the thermostat was stuck shut.

I am perplexed as to why this is going on, so if someone has an idea I'd be happy to hear it.

Engine overheats after intake gasket replacement

Air trapped and steam making your needle peg to red. Let it burp and turn heater on

I took the thermostat out, and it runs nice and cool. Maybe this will get the air out. I swapped the thermostat, so when it's cool I will drop it in and see what happens.
