How do I set the timing on a 1991 350 TPI motor?
How do I set the timing on a 1991 350 TPI motor?
Hi, I am getting ready to install a new distributor-the engine is a stock 350 TPI with an automatic transmission. The decal says to set the timing at 6* [DR]BTDC. What does the "DR" mean? Does it mean that the 6* should register when put in drive? So, what should the reading be when in park to achieve 6*BTDC in drive? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Steve

its ok to set the timing in park . you will need to first disconnect the tan with black stripe wire over by the top of the heat /ac box.once you set the base timing . it will be under total control of the ECM .

As said above, ok to set timing in park, just make sure the engine is fully warmed up.

Thank you guys, I appreciate your help. So I will install the distributor, get it warmed up first before setting the timing. Now, when I start it up it won't matter if its in the right time setting as it gets warmed up first, right? Then once it's warmed up disconnect the tan and black stripe wire and adjust the timing accordingly. Once achieved then reconnect the tan and black stripe wire and the ECM will take care of the rest.

As long as the timing is within a certain ballpark it'll run. I like to get it close with a light (EST disconnected.) 4-6-8 degrees is fine. Shut it off. Reconnect the EST. Restart. Let run to warm up. Once hot, I recheck it. It's often where I left it.
