Headers glow red/ get obscenly hot

What causes this? I had a very dramatic fire last fall because of this (Read all about it on one of my last posts). It just seems very wrong that things got that hot only a few minutes into the break in. I'm wondering timing or maybe a carb issue. Anyone else have experience with this?

Timing would be #1, lean carb jetting would be another cause, but I put my money on timing. I have seen it many times.

Re: Headers glow red/ get obscenly hot

Same here.

Advance the timing about 20° to start with. Then maybe another 20° to get it to run right.

What's happening is, ignition is occurring SO LATE in the engine cycle, that the fuel has STILL not completed its burn when the exh valve opens.
