I was told my fuel pump on my 1991 Camaro RS 305 was "going bad." I find that to be odd because I always thought fuel pumps either worked or didn't work at all. The only indication of a bad fuel pump is that when the car sits for more than 30 minutes it takes 2-3 seconds of cranking to get it to fire up. That's telling me the check valve is bad.

I'm taking the car in to get a sending unit put in,and I'll probably just go ahead and get a new fuel pump along with it. I just wanna know if the check valve ISN'T part of the fuel pump;then I'll know that this other guy is talking out of his ***.

 

Check valve is part of pump. It's a fairly big job to change the sending unit, and no extra work to change the pump while you're in there so change it.


It's not that a pump either works or doesn't, it's an electric motor that wears with use so it degrades slowly.

 

I'll have the shop do it all. I don't have the tools and certainly not the space to do it myself unforntanatley

 

Just make sure that they aren't planning on cutting the floor to R&R the pump.
