What is with all this OIL?!!?

The in my car is all foamy and yellow. I was told I was putting too much in. I cut back (so I think) and it's still doing it. Then, I check my air filter and there is oil all on the filter and at the bottow. I was told it's the PCV deal. What is this and what does this mean?

How much did you put in? Oil getting on your air filter could be from excessive crankcase pressure, ie your pcv valve is not working. Try replacing it. Its that little silver thing that comes out of your valve cover and has a hose connected to it.

A PCV valve is only a couple of dollars, so I would go ahead and try it.

Foamy oil usually indicates it has moisture in it. So does the yellow color. The PCV valve still may be the culprit, as it helps remove water vapor that condenses in the crankcase. If the moisture is coolant, you may have a blown intake or head gasket.
If you are seriously oversevicing the engine with oil, the crank may be submerged and whipping up the foam. It should look like normal oil again after the car has been sitting a couple of hours. Just put in enough to read between low and full on the dipstick.

If it's yellow and foamy, and stays that way after a few hours, I'd change all of it (as well as the filter.) Our cars take 5 quarts of oil to get it up to the full line, and that includes however much oil sits in the filter.

General Info

Our cars take 4.5 quarts of oil with the standard filter .5. If you use a truck filter PH13 1qt ect.. It takes 5 qt's. The PCV can cause a moisture problem if you live in a moist climate and the PCV is shot. The PCV valve located in your valve cover (yea I know you probably know where it is) should be fairly free and if you shake it it should make a clicking sound. If not its probably worn out.
