Aftermarket Mal Rev Tach - shorts out engine

84 Bird - Mallor rev limiter tach - hooked to brown tach wire on HEI (Mallory). Occasionally, the motor will not start - unhook the tach (unplug from Distributor) and car starts immediately. The factory tach does not work - can I cut the brown wire and wire directly (brown wire) to the mallory tach wire? I have had this tach on another car for years without any issues. The limiter and shift light do work.
Thanks - byron

Re: Aftermarket Mal Rev Tach - shorts out engine

It sounds as if the rev limiter function is killing the HEI module at almost no RPM. I'd suspect a faulty or in compatible tach/rev control. Usually the factory tach signal is the white wire, and the brown (tan) wire is for the switched primary side of the coil. Most aftermarket tachs can use that wire, but the HEI module seems to have a problem with this one.
