Starter not lining up on flexplate

The part of the starter that stops the bendix gear is not even passed the teeth on the flexplate. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? If so, what did you do to fix it? It's a Chevy 350 in an 1990 Camaro.

Re: Starter not lining up on flexplate

Not completely sure what we're looking at there...

Kinda looks like maybe the Bendix is retracted. (i.e. it's not in "Start")... ??

What 350 is it? What flex plate? What starter? Be specific; "stock" isn't a good enough answer, unless you mean "stock for a 90 Camaro 350".

Engage the starter. How much of the bendix teeth go into the ring gear teeth?

I don't really see anything wrong with that picture.

Re: Starter not lining up on flexplate

Could the flexplate be on backwards?

The raised part of the mounting "pads" goes towards the torque converter.
