Fuel Tank / Sender unit Questions - 85 TPI Firebird

Hi Guys,

I think i killed my fuel sender on my car by putting 12v to the sender signal wire while trying to hook up my new gauges and I need to replace it.

The shirt version of the story is I've done a OBD2 0411 conversion on the motor and at the same time I've put a Holden VY commodore dash and gauge cluster into the car.

Seeing as the sender is shot, the easiest thing would be to install and mod if necessary a VY sending unit, as it would have the correct ohm sensor(one of the 350-65ohm or similar types) and would wire directly into the gauges.
This type of sender has a 2 wire setup for 12v and return wire, as well as the pump power.

The problem is, the VY sender unit only has 3 pipes coming from it, not 4 like the TPI one.

My question is,
1. Can i still use the 3 pipe one without having pressure equalisation issues, that is, can the tank breathe without the 4th tube, and

2. How does the sender unit attach/seal against the tank?

Here's a link to the replacement sender i want to use:

There's a couple of ways i can maybe do it, including taking the actual sender sensor off the VY one and installing it and the harness to the TPI one, but has anyone tried anything remotely similar before or have any idea how I'd successfully do this?

Import the '02 4th gen plastic ls1 fuel tank, works perfectly with gauge re-calibration.

If you dont want to, there is a place called Howard Instruments in victoria, contact 03 9457 4755.
send them your existing sender unit, and get it rewound to suit the gauge, you will still need to reprogram the values of the gauge however to suit as the ohm vs litres calibration will be off.

Yeah the plastic tank would definitely be the easiest option.

Any chance you know of a wreckers or cheap freight company to use?

I've tried searches on ebay for them but can't seem to find anything reasonably priced.

usatoaus.com
thats who i used for my freight on the tank. it took 2-3 months to get here, but was cheap. overall i think it costed about $500. including tank.

here's a link to a tank similar to what i got.

if you do go with this option, let me know and i'll give ya the info on how to change the charcoal canister to the vy ss one and dump that purge solenoid on the 4th gen tank, as thats a USA emissions thing.
